History of the archival services in Maribor
The tradition of collecting, preserving and protecting of archives in the area, the Regional Archives Maribor is competent for, is much older than the institution itself.
In the close vicinity of Maribor one can already trace back the care for the protection of the written word to the Middle Ages (1164). The parchment testifies the oldest naming of Maribor castle and is the oldest preserved written document referring to that territory at the same time.
Archival service in Maribor (in a narrower sense) received its basis only in the middle of the 19th century. It is connected with the transfer of the Lavant bishopric of St. Andrä in Carinthia to Maribor. In the course of this transfer they also brought old, rich and very important archival holdings to Maribor.
Concrete needs and wishes for the protection of cultural heritage with a special emphasis on archives can be traced back to the establishment of the Lavant Bishopric Museum established in 1896 and the German Museum Society established in 1902.
In 1903 educated Slovenes established the Historical Society of Slovenian Styria in Maribor. They began to collect archives of private provenance, especially legacies of Styrian creative artists. In 1909 they also decided to publish directories of the collected archives.
The idea of the establishment of public archives in Maribor already turned up in the beginning of the 20th century. Formally they became aware of them in 1933, when the Regulation on County Archives Maribor was adopted and archives were established as public institutions. The area of work of these archives was expanded to the region of former Slovenian Styria and parts of Koroška and Prekmurje formerly belonging to Yugoslavia.
In 1941 archives ceased its work as an independent institution and was incorporated into the museum in Maribor as a special department. Its professional activities nearly stopped.
As an independent institution archives were established only in 1952. Officially it was called State Archives of the Peoples Republic of Slovenia – branch office Maribor. In 1963 archives were given their official name and competence still valid today: Regional Archives Maribor.
